Athi Bicycle Club(ABC)- a Bicycle Business Model for society

 In April 2018, the United Nations General Assembly declared June 3 as International World Bicycle Day.Acknowledging the uniqueness, longevity and versatility of the bicycle, which has been in use for two centuries, and that it is a simple, affordable, reliable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transportation, fostering environmental stewardship and health


According to the World Health Organization (WHO), safe infrastructure for walking and cycling is also a pathway for achieving greater health. According to UN bicycle is tool of sustainable development and eco-friendly transportation along with good health of human being.

*Aim of UN for celebrating bicycle day :-*
*Encourage members to give attention towards bicycle in their development program.

*Encourage road safety for bicycle and integrate with their sustainable mobility plan.

*Encourages Member States to adopt best practices and means to promote the bicycle among all members of society.






What come in your mind after hearing "bicycle" word ?

Childhood memories, health concern, environment, mode of transportation for poor people or bicycle competition in Olympic or any other event.....

But few people think different and create a new path in society.

One of the people from our society who think different are MS Athirup from Thiruvananthapuram.

Athrup work in engineering consultancy after completing education. Ten year ago the idea of using bicycle for transportation in city comes in his mind and he decided to use bicycle. Other team members of Atirup's also support their idea. After 3 year later he quit his job to establish Athi’s Bicycle Club (ABC) with his personal savings and help from few others. Athrup tell that cycling was his best memories from childhood.

It is sponsored based business model. ABC's provide free of cost service. Cycle are purchased from different sponsors and they put their logo on cycle. ABC start from 50 cycle and now day it is available in 3 city of India (Thiruvananthapuram’s Chennai and Kochi). Athrup said that they are not iniated this for earning profit , they are doing for society.

Steps for getting bicycle :-
1. Send station code to a given no. on website via sms with certain details for verification process.
2. A code will sent for unlocking bicycle alon with terms and conditions.
4. User can take bicycle from any ABC bicycle stand and return to another stand with in 24 hours.
5. Membership is free of cost without any security money.




Athrup want to create a change in society and wish people become more healthy and pollution levels decrease from vehicles.
